The Hunter Boot .. on my Saturday Shopping List

Saturdays Shopping List: The Hunter Rain Boot
Rachel Bilson in the "Jimmy Choo for Hunter" Boot
The Jimmy Choo for Hunter

Rain Rain Go Away... or Please stay? Because I am loving the Hunter Rainboot and Welly Socks. It is such a comfortable boot and so fashionable. It’s great with denim, dresses and skirts, leggings and jeggings. The boot and sock is available in many different colors and textures. There has also been a collaboration with Jimmy Choo and the “Jimmy Choo for Hunter Boot” and can be found at Jimmy Choo Stores, Nieman Marcus, Nordstrom and FootCandy  locations. Celebrities such as Ashley Olsen, Rachel Bilson, Kate Moss and Julia Stiles have been spotted in this boot. It’s a great alternative to the ever so popular UGG boot because it keeps water away and the taller boot is chic, and the colors are great! I’m a fan of the original black and of course I love the “Jimmy Choo for Hunter” but if you’re on a budget the Original Boot will do the job.

How the Wellies Came to Be: An Article from Hunter

The Welly made it's first appearance in 1817. At this time men's fashion was going through significant changes as gentlemen swapped their knee breeches in favour of trousers. This, however, led to a problem finding comfortable footwear. The previously popular Hessian boot, worn with breeches was styled with a curvy turned-down top and heavy metallic braid - totally unsuitable for wearing under trousers.
To this end, Arthur Wellesley, the first Duke of Wellington instructed his shoemaker, Hoby of St. James Street London, to modify this 18th century boot.  They designed a new boot in soft calfskin leather, removed the trim and made the cut closer around the leg. It was hard wearing for battle, yet comfortable for wearing in the evening. The Iron Duke didn't know what he'd started - the  was dubbed the ‘wellington' and the name has stuck ever since.
Wellington boots quickly caught on with patriotic British gentlemen eager to emulate their war hero. Considered fashionable and foppish in the best circles, they remained the main fashion for men through the 1840's. In the 1850's they were more commonly made in the calf high version and in the 1860's they were both superseded by the ankle boot, except for when riding.
So far these boots were made of leather, however in America, where there was more experimentation in shoemaking, producers were beginning to manufacture with rubber. One such entrepreneur, Mr. Henry Lee Norris, moved to Scotland in search of a suitable site to produce rubber footwear  - here sees the beginning of Hunter's story.
Production of the Wellington boot was dramatically boosted with the advent of World War I due to the demand for a sturdy boot suitable for the conditions in flooded trenches. Making the wellington boot a functional necessity.
Again the Wellington boot played an important contribution during World War II. At the outbreak of war in September 1939, although trench warfare was not a feature of the war, the wellington still played an important role. Those forces assigned the task of clearing Holland of the enemy had to work in terrible flooded conditions.
By the end of the war the wellington had become popular among men, women and children for wear in wet weather. The boot had developed to become far roomier with a thick sole and rounded toe. Also, with the rationing of that time, labourers began to use them for daily work.
Wellington boots are waterproof and are most often made from rubber or a synthetic equivalent. They are usually worn when walking on very wet or muddy ground, or to protect the wearer from industrial chemicals and they are traditionally knee-height.
In Britain, there is a light-hearted sport, known as 'wellie wanging', which involves the throwing of Wellington boots as far as possible. Wellington boots, though invented in Britain, are very popular all over the world.  In cold climates they were especially useful in springtime, when melting snows leave wet and muddy ground for a couple of months. Children can often be seen wearing them to school and office staff wear them to work to save their shoes.
Green wellies are popular in Britain, while black wellies remain the favourite in Scandinavia and the USA. Wellies specifically made for cold weather, lined with warm insulating material, are especially popular in Northern Europe.

Must Have: Motorcycle Pant

With leggings, jeggings and skinny jeans being all the rage… I am obsessed with this trend, The motorcycle pant. It is sexy yet sporty and a look that can be dressed up or played down, and perfect for a day on the back of a Ducati. Pair the motorcycle pant with a great pair of pumps, riding boots or over the knee boots and goes great with a slinky silk top or cashmere sweater. My favorite pair I’m loving right now is The crop moto by Rich & Skinny and can be found at Nordstrom.   I also love the Diane von Furstenberg 'Georgian' Knit Motocross Pants. As a young girl I’ve always been a fan of motocross, and motorcycles, and this trend is so exciting because it creates a marriage with motor sports and fashion.

Fashion Icon Carrie Bradshaw

In celebration of the release of Sex and the City 2, I only found it fitting to celebrate one of my favorite style Icons, Carrie Bradshaw.

The Famous Tu-Tu and Notorious Closet
Carrie Bradshaw, the sex columnist in New York is not only iconic for her style but for her confidence. Confidence is sexy, and no matter what Carrie wore, or didn’t wear… she was always adorned with Sex Appeal.  Famous for her love of expensive footwear, she wasn’t short on Manolo’s… one can recall Carrie being “held up for her new Manolo Blahniks.” This would only happen to Miss Bradshaw. She wasn’t the “matchy-match” girl, but more of a mix and match.  If you take vintage, Couture and Fancy Footwear and put them all together Carrie Bradshaw is what you’ll get. If anyone can learn anything from this fashion icon, it is that confidence is the key, take some great pieces put them together and as long as you know you can rock it…. Go for it. It’s great to pair contrasting colors, different textures, and don’t be afraid to dress how you feel.  Grab a great pair of heels and pair them with anything to bring out your inner vixen…Don’t conform, and always make a statement like Carrie Bradshaw would.

The famous Newspaper dress

My favorite outfit from STC 2

This is a simple feminine look that I love!

Sex and the City 2

The movie became available to purchase today, and I’ve already got it loaded on my AppleTV.
The series was amazing, I adored the first movie and number two was just as amazing. Packed with tons of fashion, hot men, the best of girlfriends and LOVE. If only I could go through Carrie’s Wardrobe Closet.. I would be in heaven. With the rainy season nearing, I’ll be catching up on the old episodes and marveling in the fashion, Thank you Patricia Field!!!

The boutique off of Main St in down town Napa was warm and welcoming and filled with Vintage Classics and modern marvels. Not only do they have a great variety of garments, bags and jewelry but they also offer Personal Shopping Services.

A Little Background on the Owners Linday Kroll & Paige Smith

In 2007 Lindsay Kroll sought an opportunity to use her entrepreneurial spirit, her passion for fashion, and her collection of antique cake plates to create Cake Plate – a women’s boutique.

In late 2008, Lindsay’s sister, Paige Smith, a personal stylist and merchandise marketer in Los Angeles, moved back to Napa to join Lindsay at Cake Plate. Together they focus on buying classic, yet modern styles, and creating meaningful and lasting relationships with clients.

Cake Plate combines women’s clothing and accessory designers with timeless styles that relate to fashionable women everywhere. A contemporary, fashion conscious woman can find pieces suitable for tea at the Ritz, a night on the town, or a backyard barbeque

My Mother and Sister are currently across the pond, touring the beautiful city of Aukland New Zealand while visiting her boyfriend who is filming on location for a newly remade TV series  "The Power Rangers." They've been touring caves, shopping in amazing villages and high end boutiques, drinking great wine and enjoying culinary treats. "
Auckland, New Zealand, is famous for its “four seasons in a day” weather, even when that season happens to be spring. The city has been living up to its rep starting with New Zealand Fashion Week in late September in the old America’s Cup boat sheds down on the Viaduct Harbour. Sunny one minute and pouring the next was the way one visiting designer described the days. A few blocks uptown from the show venues, the Vulcan Lane precinct is the city’s year-round indie fashion hub, lined with boutiques, pubs, noodle bars, hipsters and hordes of Asian students. They’re covering up in trench and duffle coats and leather bomber jackets — the last seen on almost every corner, usually teamed with skinny jeans or opaque black tights, Ugg boots, sneakers and supersized scarves."

Mom and Katie, I can't wait to see the fashionable goodies you two bring home. Happy Travels... Cheers!!!

Why we LOVE Brian Atwood

Brian Atwood

Besides the fact that the designer is extremely attractive, he also designs some of the best heels. His designs are edgy yet sophisticated and reach the highest heights. They are the perfect party shoe, and definitely make a statement. They have been seen on Carrie in Sex and the City and they scream sex appeal. One can't help but feel extremely feminine and sexy with Atwoods on.

Napa Valley’s Foot Candy … a must see!

Where can one go to find exceptional customer service, Louboutin, Blahnik, and Choo, and Napa Valley Culture all in one?

"Blake Lively (again) in the Louboutin Bibi"

In the heart of the Valley is an amazing boutique, Foot Candy. The shoe specialists are friendly and very knowledgeable and they have an amazing selection of the latest styles of Fabulous High end designer footwear, designer bags and clothing. The town of St. Helena has such a warm, quaint and friendly feel to it. One can find amazing footwear, vintage treasures and delicious culinary delights on Main street.  I highly recommend making a girls trip to Napa Valley for fine wine and a new wardrobe revamp. Whether you’re a gal for a great Platform pump, strappy heel, or decadent flat… you won’t leave there empty handed.  With Christian Louboutin, Brian Atwood, Manolo Blahnik, Tory Burch, Sam Edelman, Valentino,  Jimmy Choo, Juicy Couture, UGG Australia, and Many More. The Valentino in the window nearly made me stop in my tracks. This truly is one of Napa Valley’s greatest secrets.

Sunday's Shopping List

I love the Fall/Winter season, mostly because a new wardrobe is on the horizon, I get to bring out the leather and yes cook my turtle fudge brownies…. But back to accessories and my Sunday shopping list!!!

MICHAEL Michale Kors Fingerless Astor Gloves
I love the leather, the warm interior and the studded embellishments on top. These are great for Fall because they will keep you warm, but won’t make you feel like you’re inaccessible.

If you’re going to bare your fingers you want to make sure you have a great manicure.  I’m trading in my signature OPI “Vodka and Caviar” red for this toasty CHANEL polish. I love the look of a dark manicure.

I’m an avid Gossip Girl fan, and if only I could get a hold of SVW’s wardrobe I would be in heaven. I absolutely love the clear oversized umbrella! You can find it at Target in the accessories department. (recession friendly)

Another great item I’m loving is a Cloche or Newsboy hat. They look great with a messy side bun, and a classy way to keep your head warm.
I’m a big fan of the lace up boots, but decided to go with a riding boot for this season. Check out Vince Camuto… I LOVE!!!

A garment I am obsessed with is the button up silk blouse. It’s so versatile… great with leggings/jeggings, a pencil skirt, boyfriend denim and for the warmer weather jean shorts and flippy’s. It’s a great layering piece and a nice way to dress up a casual look. I’m a fan of Chantilly pink, but heather grey is amazing too!  Try “Joie” or “EXPRESS”.

"Shoemaker of the Stars" Salvatore Ferragamo

Salvatore Ferragamo
If there are two things I love it is Classic movies and amazing footwear! Both are a common passion with my girlfriends and I, and I thank my dear friend Alicia  for introducing me to the brand, and her love for Ferragamo  has rubbed off on me and inspired me to dig deeper and learn about the icon she and I love so much.
His most famous shoe is the ‘Vara’ that started In the late 70’s and is still successful today. He Has been around since the 1920’s and is known as the shoemaker for the stars. He invented the cork wedge heel (one of my summer time favorites) and it was the inspiration for the Shoe worn by the lovely Judy Garland. In 1949 was when he created his first bad  which still hold true to be amazing with great craftsmanship today. He created the “Suede Ballerina with a strap” for the iconic Audrey Hepburn and has created shoes for actresses such as Brigette Bardot and even Madonna as ‘Evita’. In the 70’s he launched men’s shoes and clothing ( I absolutely love the way the suits fit… tres chic!). The recent drama “Australia” with Nicole Kidman was lucky enough to have Ferragamo design her shoe wardrobe. Ferragamo is a legend and had amazing designs. We all fall in love with labels but rarely learn about the art and the creator that is behind the label. Every designer has a story that is unique and truly inspiring.  (information courtesy of www.ferragamo.com)

Style Icon: Audrey Hepburn

Style Icon:  Audrey Hepburn
“I never think of myself as an icon, I just do my thing.” – Audrey Hepburn
Audrey Hepburn is the ultimate model of class, sophistication and style. With her sleek up-do’s, kitten heels and cat-like sunglasses she’s an icon with timeless class. The opening scene from Breakfast at Tiffany’s it all. This is a look that every woman should keep in her closet. The little black dress, pearls and a great pair of sunglasses!
She was more than an actress and style Icon. Hepburn was a humanitarian and loved to do good by others.
Today, the Audrey Hepburn Children's Fund supports many organizations around the world dedicated to helping improve the lives of children through various programs and initiatives. www.audreyhepburn.com
We should all remember the Icons who came before us, and why they are honored so highly. One should always be classy, look out for others and look amazing while doing so.

Emulate her look with a pair of Black Dior Bagetelle Sunglasses. www.diorcouture.com  (1950’s inspired butterfly shape)
The kitten Heel is coming back!  This is a great height for those who don’t want to wear sky high platforms but still want a feminine heel. Check out Christian Loubatin and Manolo Blahnik  ( Foot Candy Boutique in St. Helena, Walnut Creek and Sonoma).
For the perfect Little Black dress I like Trina Turk, BCBG and DVF.
Let’s not forget the pearls! If you don’t want to splurge, You can find great accessories at Target that will do the trick!
Pearls are an investment piece and are timeless, classy and chic Just like Audrey Hepburn.

The Leaves are Changing, But it's still Haute in Cali ... A Quick Look at Fall Trends

This Indian summer doesn’t want to leave California, but it doesn’t have to prevent us from falling in love with Fall’s must have items. Cargo, Lace and Camel Oh MY!!!  IF you’ve picked up any fashion magazine, you know that this Fall is all about those brave men and women who serve our country … the trend is all about the Military. The combat boots to the structured jacket, an ode to our soldiers is on the fashion forefront. The new black is Camel and Army Green.  I would like to take this moment to thank all the men and women who have served and protected our Country, without you we would not be able to embrace our freedom and fashion.  I tip my beret to you!!!  The trend may be Military but don’t be afraid to add a feminine touch of lace to it. Take that Military Jacket and pair it with a pair of ( J Brand ) Skinny’s and a Lacey top for some movement. We saw the bomber jacket last season, and I still feel it’s a great must have item for 2010. My Bomber meets my every day needs and is a perfect way to spice up a cocktail dress.  A trend that PETA would love is Faux Fur, I'm obsessed with the shaggy vintage looking faux fur that is out right now. Throw a faux fur vest  (Kensie can be found at Nordstrom) over a silk baby doll camisole and you've added a little vintage hippie to your night out. The Fall wardrobe is all about layering, and texture. Look for accessories that have a great hand. I'm always a fan of a great pair of leather gloves... try a pair of elbow length to add some drama. (The Wilson's Outlet has great deals on accessories)
Until my next style watch, Remember take the trends and make them your own  keep it Haute & Classy Ladies and Gentlemen.
